Butter slime is SO MUCH FUN to play with! It’s soft and spreadable with a buttery smooth texture – which is how it got its name, because there’s definitely no butter involved in making it!

Our simple butter slime recipe uses Model Magic clay (a soft, air dry modelling clay) and is activated using contact solution (no borax required!). It’s very satisfying to stretch, squish, and play with AND super easy to clean up!

Step 3: Add colour (optional)

  • Add about 1 Tablespoon of acrylic paint to your slime mixture to add colour.

If you're using coloured Model Magic clay you can skip this step.

  • Stir until the colour is consistent. Add more paint until you're happy with the colour.

Keep in mind that once you add the clay the colour will lighten up quite a bit.

Step 4: Add the slime activator

  • Pour in 2 teaspoons of contact lens solution.

  • Stir until well combined and the mixture starts to become slime-like (it will still be very sticky and liquidy at this point - don't add more activator unless it hasn't thickened at all).

Step 5: Mix in the clay

  • Unwrap a 4 ounce package of Model Magic clay.

  • Press the clay into the slime.

  • Start working the clay into the slime. It will be messy and take a lot of kneading.

To work the slime into the clay, you have two options:

First, cover the clay in slime and then hold it above the bowl as you work it in. Then return the clay mixture to the bowl to cover it in more slime and repeat.

Second, you can dump the whole mixture out of the bowl and knead it together on a countertop, table, or baking sheet.

  • Eventually you will fully combine the sticky liquid and the clay to create a beautiful soft, buttery slime.

What type of glue should I use to make butter slime?

We always recommend using Elmer’s School Glue to make slime. It works consistently to make great slime, and we know we’ll get the results we want.

If you use a different brand of glue it’s possible it will still work, but we can’t guarantee that your slime will work properly with the measurements used in our recipe.

What type of slime activator do you recommend?

We like to use contact lens solution in our slime recipes, because it’s so easy to use! The brand we use isRenu Advanced Formula by Bausch + Lomb (called Renu Fresh here in Canada).

In order for the slime to activate, the contact lens solution you use must have boric acid in it. Different brands of contact lens solution may have different amounts of boric acid in them, so if you use a different brand you may need to use less or more contact solution in your slime.

What makes butter slime less sticky?

We had a LOT of stickiness while we were making this slime. We were a little worried when we started mixing the clay into the glue mixture because it was ALL OVER our hands. But by the time we had completely mixed everything together the stickiness had gone away.

If the clay is completely mixed into the glue mixture and your slime is still sticky, you can add more contact lens solution (a little bit at a time) until the slime gets to a consistency you’re happy with.

What clay is best for butter slime?

We used Model Magic clay because it’s soft, non-toxic, and reasonably priced. It’s a stretchy air dry modelling clay that you can find on Amazon or at the craft store.

Other brands of clay might work, but we can’t promise that they’ll work as well as Model Magic. If you’re trying a different brand of clay, make sure it’s soft, air dry, and non-toxic.

Do you need shaving cream to make butter slime?

No, you don’t need shaving cream to make butter slime. Shaving cream adds a bit of a foamy texture to your slime, but the foam only lasts for a few hours.

Many butter slime recipes online ask for a little bit of shaving cream, but the amounts are usually so small that it really doesn’t do anything to change the slime’s texture. If you want to use shaving cream to make your slime super fluffy (and fun!) check out our recipe for fluffy slime.

How long does butter slime last?

If you store it in a plastic zip bag and squish out all the air before sealing it, the slime should stay soft for about 4 or 5 days before it firms up a bit. After that, it’s still squishy and fun to play with, but it won’t be as soft and stretchy.

Butter slime is definitely the best the first day you make it.

What can I do to make my butter slime soft again?

Try placing the butter slime in a bowl of hot water and letting it sit for a few minutes. Once the water temperature cools down enough to touch, knead the slime while it’s in the water. This will help to make the slime more stretchy and soft again.

You can also try kneading more hand lotion into the slime. We’ve had success using hair conditioner to make slime soft again as well. Sometimes it’s a bit of an experiment to see what will work.

This butter slime is so fun to play with! It’s a simple recipe that kids will love! Make it yellow like real butter, or tint it your favourite colour!

Once the butter slime has lost a bit of its stretchiness, try adding the slime to a balloon for a soft and satisfying stress ball (see our Play-Doh stress ball post for tips!).
